Poem: An Invisible Handshake–A Poem for Pvt. Danny Chen

A co-worker sent me this New York Magazine article Pvt. Danny Chen, 1992-2011 which moved me to write this poem. Pvt. Chen was 19-years-old when he committed suicide after terrible hazing and racism. It is sad when lives are cut short, especially under such means.

Baby One More Time: A Study of Sound, Time, and Britney Spears

Note:  I submitted this to my Sonic Literacies coursework as a listening study, but a few people wanted to read it, so here we go – hope its content is as intriguing as the title!

06172011130357There is no question that a Britney Spears concert is a visual experience – a cinematic display of dancers, multi-colored laser lights, multimedia presentations, and larger-than-life props that match larger-than-life acts. Her most recent concert touts the name of her latest album release Femme Fatale and, along with the above, visually showcases a cat call out to some famous femme fatales that are also easy to discern by eye: the iconic billowing, pleated skirt of Marilyn Monroe and the gauzy bright fabrics and gold trim of Cleopatra. In these homages, Spears slinks through a main narrative as a spy undercover. She is a spy being spied upon by a grungy enemy seen in cinematic transitions between scene and costume changes and, through it all, Spears emerges as the ultimate femme fatale. But where would this siren be without her songs?
